Classification in LED TVs

LED TVs are usually LCD TVs which use LEDs (light-emitting diodes) to illuminate the display. There are two ways by which these light-emitting diodes can be used to illuminate the screen. Based on the method used, this high definition LED TV is grouped into two categories.

In the first, light-emitting diodes (LEDs) are placed in such a way that the complete back section of the display is covered―this is the Full-array TV, also called backlit LED Television.

In the second technique, light-emitting diodes are placed around the border or the edge of the display―this is the edge-lit LED Television.

The edge-lit LEDs are LCD TVs in which light emitting diodes are organized along the four sides of the screen in form of small strips. Although the source of light is set along the edges, a particularly designed panel guides the light from the edge of the screen to the center. This produces consistent color range across the screen. This is major contrast of full-array Televisions in which the light emitting diodes are arranged behind the display. As the LEDs which act as the light source are set along the edges, instead of precisely behind the screen, LED TVs end up being approximately 40 percent thinner than their backlit LED counterparts.

This may be the reason why many LED TV manufacturing companies in India are giving priority to Edge-lit LED TV. The depth of these TV sets – which is somewhere around an inch or less, makes wall-mounting of these sets quite easier. As they are very thin, this reduces the shipping cost on these television sets though they are already inexpensive as compared to full-array TVs.

When customer compares backlit LEDs with edge-lit, it is obvious that they are bound to come across numerous negative and positive attributes of either of these television types and hence, the best way is to decide what your priority is.
