It seems it has become even more difficult? It does not matter; now we’ll tell you what is behind each letter and put everything in order on the example of the new Sony models.
What is HDR?
HDR or High Dynamic Range translates as “wide dynamic range.” The same mode you probably saw in the settings of the camera of your smartphone. And although the HDR-photo is built on other principles, the result of the technology in the TV is the same – the range of brightness is expanding. You start to see the nuances of shades, and most importantly – white and black cease to be solid spots, they show details. The picture as a whole becomes deeper and more saturated. Subjectively, this effect is even more impressive than 3D. And most importantly, no glasses are needed.
HDR is a collective name for several similar technologies: HDR10, HLG and Dolby Vision. Who among them will become a leader and whether at all, we will know in a few years? In the meantime, TV manufacturers have to support all three if possible.
HDR10 – the most common version of HDR, in which the channel has 10 bits of information. Total – up to a billion colors in the palette. But the main thing is that in such stream information about brightness and contrast is encoded. From how they dynamically change in the frame. It is what makes the picture natural.
How does it work?
It is much better for our eye to perceive gradations of brightness and color than LED TV at lowest price in Delhi can reproduce. Until 2016, TV simply could not reliably transmit natural shades. But now there are TVs with powerful backlight. The brightness of a conventional TV is hundreds of strands, and new ones, with HDR support, are thousands.
At the same time, the bandwidth of the channels for content transmission has increased, and now the video stream cannot be compressed much. The dependence is simple: the more details in the picture, the more data you need to transmit to show on the TV one frame. So became possible video format HDR, which transfers more details.
HDR is steeper than 4K?
These standards can be combined, but cannot be compared. 4K is all about the pixels count on the matrix, that is, its resolution. And HDR – about their quality, that is, the brightness and the number of transmitted color shades.
Where can I get HDR content?
Most streaming services announced support for the HDR technology. For example, on YouTube, Amazon, Netflix, etc., video in a new format is already available.

During playback, the HDR icon appears in the corner of the frame on the corresponding TV.
